Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county border betwixt Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins uncovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics found show that they were settling the locale more than likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at that time isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a much greater area than only the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be put on up until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the coming decades and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town which has witnessed accelerated development in recent times.
