Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coins uncovered in the area offer proof of this. The early Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and relics found show that they were settling the local area very likely from the 6th Century. The village existing at this time was not listed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a considerably wider area compared to the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may well have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get added till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the succeeding generations and the construction of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the last few years.
