Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near to the county border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coins found in the area show proof of this. The historical Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market during the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered show that they were inhabiting the region quite likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was then wasn't described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, incorporated a significantly bigger area than only the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be applied until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the succeeding generations and the establishing of of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in recent years.
