Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is situated next to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins found in close proximity show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the locale most probably from the 6th Century. The commune as such is not documented till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a much bigger area than just the town alone, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be appended up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding over the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in current times.
