The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place in around the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were settling the local area possibly from the sixth century. The commune existing at this time is not observed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a substantially bigger area compared to the town alone, and contained the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to numerous tenants over the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
