Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a historic past extending back to the days of the Romans, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts picked up suggest that they were living in the area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune existing then wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a considerably larger area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Heath & Reach, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to several tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the following generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town grow and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
