Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old relics and coins found near by give evidence of this fact. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were residing in the area most likely from the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, covered a substantially larger area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name could have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to several tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the coming years and the establishing of of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has seen improved development in the recent past.
