Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to thirty seven thousand and a history going back to the Roman period, when the early A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, old artefacts and coins found nearby show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who introduced a market during the tenth century, and relics discovered suggest that they were inhabiting the area very likely from the sixth century. The village as such is not referred to till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, encompassed a far bigger area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wouldn't be inserted prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants over the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen increased development in the past few years.
