Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins uncovered near by give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the locale quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as such is not remarked upon till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a much larger area than only the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wasn't added up until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).
