Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the boundary between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coins picked up nearby show evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (made by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the tenth century, and antiquities uncovered reveal that they were residing in the vicinity quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then is not remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, encompassed a considerably larger area than only the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name might possibly have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section did not get put on up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the ensuing generations and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a prospering market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
