Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace close to 37,000 and a heritage extending back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins stumbled upon in the area give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in around the 10th Century, and antiquities uncovered show that they were settling the region in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The settlement as such is not cited till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, incorporated a far greater area than merely the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be appended before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow throughout the succeeding generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has witnessed greater development in modern times.
