Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of about 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is placed close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, early artefacts and coins discovered near by give proof of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now termed the A5, ran through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who used the market place in about the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the vicinity most likely since the sixth century. The commune as it was wasn't reported till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a substantially wider area than just the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to many different tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger through the coming years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has seen accelerated development in the past few years.
