Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the border between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the Roman period, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it is placed near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early relics and coinage discovered near by give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market during the 10th Century, and relics found suggest that they were staying in the locale most likely since the sixth century. The village as such wasn't observed until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a way bigger area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may well have originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on expanding throughout the coming years and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has seen greater development in the past several years.
