Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county border in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a story extending back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies very close to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's believed that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins unearthed in the area show evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used a market in about the 10th Century, and relics found denote that they were settling the locale perhaps from the sixth century. The settlement existing at this time is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a considerably bigger area than only the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be applied prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the coming years and the arrival of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that has seen accelerated development in recent years.
