Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is placed near the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old artifacts and coins stumbled upon near by give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was them who were using the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the sixth century. The commune as such isn't reported till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a lot wider area than simply the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that has seen greater development in current times.
