Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a past going back to Roman times, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it lies next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, old artifacts and coinage stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who created the market place in about the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood more than likely since the sixth century. The village as it was then isn't mentioned till 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a significantly greater area than only the town itself, and included the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't added on up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger throughout the ensuing generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve.
