Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of around 37,000 and a past going back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins stumbled on nearby give proof of this. The historic Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up a market sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were inhabiting the region possibly from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time is not documented till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, embraced a substantially wider area than only the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not applied prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following years and the building of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen greater development in the last few years.
