Leighton Buzzard Information:

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a history extending back to Roman days, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage stumbled on nearby show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village at that time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town might have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
