Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard sits right on the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were later followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood probably from the 6th Century. The commune as it was isn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a significantly bigger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be included up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town which has seen improved development in the recent past.
