Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there were settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coins uncovered near by show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and relics unearthed show that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The settlement as it was is not described until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a significantly bigger area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wouldn't be added on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following generations and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that's witnessed greater development in the last few years.
