Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a story going back to the times of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's believed that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, historic relics and coinage unearthed nearby show proof of this. The old Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embraced a significantly wider area than merely the town alone, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing during the coming decades and the construction of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw it evolve and develop. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
