Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, old artefacts and coinage discovered nearby show evidence of this. The early Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through the nearby towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the area quite likely from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time isn't cited until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a lot greater area than just the town itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Eggington, Billington and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added on till the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing throughout the coming generations and the establishing of of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve.
