Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands very close to the boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past going back to the Roman era, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is roughly midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coins stumbled upon in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced a market during the tenth century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The commune as it was is not discussed till 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a lot larger area than merely the town itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be applied up until the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the coming generations and the coming of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen improved development in recent years.
