Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county border betwixt Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies near the Chilterns and has a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage discovered near by offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who developed the market place in about the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the area possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't remarked upon till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a much wider area than only the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the ensuing years and the building of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a thriving market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
