Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the times of the Romans, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coins found near by offer evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (established by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics stumbled on show that they were settling the region probably from the sixth century. The village existing then was not cited until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 recognised Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a substantially larger area than just the town itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be applied till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow during the following generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop.
