Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard is near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage picked up in the area give proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled upon suggest that they were settling the neighbourhood more than likely from the sixth century. The commune as such is not referred to till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book described Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a far wider area than merely the town itself, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not inserted until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants through the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger over the following decades and the development of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a flourishing market town that's seen accelerated development in current times.
