Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a story going back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is situated near to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historic artefacts and coinage picked up in the area offer proof of this. The historic Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the close by areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who created the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts stumbled upon imply that they were settling the area in all probability since the 6th Century. The village existing at this time wasn't listed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, covered a lot bigger area than only the town alone, and consisted of the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing throughout the ensuing years and the coming of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw it develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed increased development in the past several years.
