Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard sits very close to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, when the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it is placed very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, early relics and coinage picked up nearby show proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now known as the A5, ran through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who introduced the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts picked up indicate that they were staying in the area most likely from the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't referred to till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a significantly greater area compared to the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put on prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding through the succeeding years and the development of a railway service and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town that's seen improved development in current times.
