Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the county border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage discovered in the area show proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable roughly 2,000 in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities discovered show that they were living in the vicinity quite possibly since the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a way greater area than merely the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not to be included till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants through the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow during the ensuing years and the development of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and evolve. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has seen increased development in the past few decades.
