Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary in between Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around thirty seven thousand and a historic past going back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it lies next to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coinage found in the area give evidence of this fact. The historical Watling Street (crafted by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used a market in around the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were living in the local area most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement existing at this time wasn't mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognized Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a way bigger area than simply the town by itself, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may have derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not inserted until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to several tenants over the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow during the coming decades and the construction of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a flourishing market town which has witnessed improved development in the recent past.
