Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman days, when the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, age-old artifacts and coinage picked up near by show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably from the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't reported until 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 described Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embodied a far greater area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name may have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not applied before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it a necessity to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a busy market town that has witnessed increased development in the past few decades.
