Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is situated close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is considered that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, early artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood most probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was isn't cited till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a significantly larger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may very well have derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a number of tenants through the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on growing during the following years and the coming of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw the town expand and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has seen increased development in modern times.
