Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary in between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman era, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjoining town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is located next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It is considered that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins unearthed in the area give evidence of this. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created a market in around the tenth century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were inhabiting the region most probably since the sixth century. The village as it was wasn't observed until 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, comprised a far wider area than simply the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be put in till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding years and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prosperous market town that has witnessed increased development in the last few years.
