Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of about 37,000 and a history going back to the Roman period, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Beds), it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage picked up in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the 10th Century, and artifacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood in all probability from the sixth century. The commune as it was then isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a far greater area than simply the town itself, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get put in till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to many different tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow through the succeeding generations and the building of a canal and a railway during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that's witnessed greater development in modern times.
