Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the nearby town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it can be found close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there were settlements in and close to what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins found near by give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe some 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were consequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities stumbled on suggest that they were residing in the vicinity in all likelihood since the sixth century. The commune existing then was not listed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, comprised a substantially greater area than merely the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name will probably have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the ages, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that has seen greater development in the past few decades.
