Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population close to 37,000 and a historical past harping back to Roman days, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were dwelling in the neighbourhood very likely since the sixth century. The village as it was isn't mentioned till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embraced a far larger area than simply the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be put on prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the coming generations and the coming of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a busy market town that has witnessed greater development in recent years.
