Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard stands close to the county border between Bucks and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the times of the Romans, when the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coins found in the area offer proof of this fact. The historic Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled on show that they were inhabiting the locale more than likely since the sixth century. The village as it was is not described till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a much larger area than merely the town by itself, and integrated the settlements of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name may very well have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not applied until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to an assortment of tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even larger over the coming generations and the appearance of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few decades.
