Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county border betwixt Bucks and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artifacts and coinage unearthed in close proximity offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, passed through the nearby towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe over two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who created a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the local area probably since the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't cited till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, incorporated a far larger area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component did not get put on until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to numerous tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
