Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard sits near to the boundary in between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Luton (Bedfordshire) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it is placed next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is believed that there were settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins uncovered in the area give proof of this. The age-old Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable around 2,000 years back, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who developed a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered mean that they were residing in the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The village as such is not mentioned till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger over the ensuing generations and the appearance of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
