Situated within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the county border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a story harping back to the times of the Romans, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lies very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coinage uncovered in close proximity show evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable about two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon show that they were living in the area undoubtedly from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a much larger area than merely the town by itself, and comprised the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name is thought to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended prior to the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it essential to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger throughout the following decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
