Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and it is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays close to the Chilterns and boasts a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there were settlements in and near to what's now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage found in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the close by towns of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were eventually followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, encompassed a considerably wider area than simply the town by itself, and consisted of the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be appended before the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a variety of tenants over the centuries, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the following years and the construction of a railway service and a canal in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Present day Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town that's seen accelerated development in the past several years.
