Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated within the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the early A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it can be found near to the Chilterns and boasts a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's felt that there had been settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage unearthed nearby give proof of this. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who used the market place in around the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered mean that they were residing in the neighbourhood undoubtedly since the 6th Century. The village as it was is not documented until 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a far greater area than just the town itself, and contained the hamlets of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not to be appended until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to many different tenants through the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding years and the establishing of of a canal and a railway in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
