Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past stretching back to the Roman era, when the historic Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins picked up in close proximity give evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, cut through the nearby areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans should have at least known of Leighton Buzzard at that time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was is not discussed until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a much wider area than only the town itself, and included the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added prior to the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a great many tenants through the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow over the following years and the development of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town which has seen greater development in the past few years.
