Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the boundary betwixt Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It is believed that there had been settlements in and near to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity offer evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the 10th Century, and artifacts discovered show that they were inhabiting the locale almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune as it was was not reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially larger area than just the town by itself, and contained the hamlets of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to various tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).
