Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lies very close to the county border between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around 37,000 and a heritage harping back to the era of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire), it sits near to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historical relics and coinage found in close proximity show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who developed a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts found imply that they were inhabiting the region in all probability from the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not documented till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, encompassed a considerably larger area than just the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name could perhaps have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece did not get added till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to a great many tenants over the years, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger over the following decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a successful market town which has seen greater development in the past several years.
