Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the border between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a past stretching back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the nearby town of Linslade it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays near to the Chilterns and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there existed settlements in and close to what's now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The old Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now identified as the A5, cut through the nearby settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using the market place in about the 10th Century, and artefacts uncovered suggest that they were residing in the local area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The commune as such is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, covered a way bigger area than only the town alone, and included the settlements of Stanbridge, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Billington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to originated from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element did not get appended prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a different "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a number of tenants through the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
