Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population close to 37,000 and a heritage going back to the era of the Romans, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it lays very close to the Chilterns and boasts a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, age-old relics and coinage discovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now named the A5, came through the close by areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who were using the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities picked up suggest that they were residing in the region probably since the sixth century. The settlement as it was was not discussed till 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a far wider area compared to the town alone, and included the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section wasn't put in up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the eras, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger during the coming years and the construction of a railway line and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be described as a bustling market town which has seen greater development in recent years.
