Factfile for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lays near the county border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a historical past extending back to Roman times, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is pretty much connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed near the Chiltern Hills and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby give proof of this. The early Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used a market sometime in the tenth century, and antiquities found show that they were dwelling in the local area perhaps from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not observed until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book mentioned Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a significantly larger area than only the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Stanbridge, Billington, Eggington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not put in till the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a great many tenants through the ages, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw it grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a blooming market town that has witnessed increased development in the recent past.
