Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the tranquil town of Leighton Buzzard lays near to the county boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of around 37,000 and a historical past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, historic artifacts and coins found nearby show evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (built by the Romans), now termed the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand years back, and the Romans should have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who created a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon indicate that they were inhabiting the local area in all probability from the sixth century. The commune as it was then was not described until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, comprised a way wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not put on until the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it necessary to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the ages, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow through the coming generations and the arrival of a railway and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has witnessed increased development in recent times.
