Based in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the border in between Beds and Bucks, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman era, when the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it is about mid-way between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Beds), it stands near to the Chilterns and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient artefacts and coins stumbled upon in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (fashioned by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and antiquities unearthed show that they were inhabiting the locale in all likelihood since the 6th Century. The commune as such isn't cited until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embraced a far larger area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Eggington, Billington, Stanbridge and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the town's name might possibly have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not inserted before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to distinguish it from a second "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a great many tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding throughout the following years and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that has seen accelerated development in the last few years.
