Leighton Buzzard Factfile:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard sits close to the county boundary betwixt Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history harping back to Roman days, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade it is roughly halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is situated near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historical artifacts and coins found nearby offer proof of this fact. The old Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now identified as the A5, went through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who set up the market place in around the 10th Century, and relics uncovered suggest that they were settling the area more than likely since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then wasn't documented till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a substantially wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may possibly have been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not included until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln found it imperative to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to several tenants over the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).
