Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard is very near to the county boundary between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is approximately midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it stands near to the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there were settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to prehistoric times, early artefacts and coinage discovered nearby give proof of this fact. The historical Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who were using a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found indicate that they were inhabiting the locale very likely since the sixth century. The village as such isn't observed till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, covered a significantly wider area than simply the town by itself, and covered the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to derived from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not to be added until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a great many tenants over the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the succeeding generations and the arrival of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and grow. Contemporary Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town that's witnessed improved development in the past few decades.
