Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of around thirty seven thousand and a heritage stretching back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is linked to the adjacent town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lies near the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a vital sand quarrying industry.

The Story of Leighton Buzzard: It is felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now named Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage uncovered near by offer evidence of this. The ancient Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was they who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts discovered suggest that they were settling the local area quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune as it was was not cited till 906 when the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book outlined Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a way greater area compared to the town itself, and contained the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added on before the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a number of tenants through the eras, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on growing over the succeeding generations and the arrival of a canal and a railway during the 19th Century saw it develop and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a successful market town which has seen increased development in recent times.
