Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Set within the county of Beds in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lays very close to the boundary in between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of about 37,000 and a history extending back to the times of the Romans, when the Roman built Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's approximately mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it lies near to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, old artefacts and coinage found in the area show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now called the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe over 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was them who set up a market during the tenth century, and artifacts stumbled upon show that they were settling the vicinity quite possibly since the 6th Century. The commune existing at this time was not remarked upon until 906 when the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a substantially larger area compared to the town alone, and covered the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may likely have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not to be added till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it beneficial to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to many different tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the ensuing decades and the appearance of a railway line and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
