Found in the county of Beds, the market town of Leighton Buzzard stands near to the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to thirty seven thousand and a heritage going back to the Roman period, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's felt that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coinage uncovered nearby offer proof of this fact. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, cut through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable around about 2,000 yrs ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was they who set up a market in about the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled on suggest that they were living in the region undoubtedly from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book recognized Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a far greater area than just the town itself, and covered the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may likely have originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wouldn't be put on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" which existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to numerous tenants through the centuries, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard carried on expanding over the coming decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and expand. Modern day Leighton Buzzard is a thriving market town that's witnessed accelerated development in the past few years.
