Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Located in the county of Beds in the East of England, the market town of Leighton Buzzard lays close to the county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of approximately 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, when the Roman built Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it sits near to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is felt that there had been settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this. The age-old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, came through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some 2,000 in years past, and the Romans would have at the very least known of the village as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts found suggest that they were residing in the locale more than likely from the sixth century. The village existing at that time was not mentioned till 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, embodied a significantly greater area than only the town alone, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on up until the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to various tenants through the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who assisted Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger through the ensuing generations and the development of a canal and a railway service during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a prospering market town that has seen accelerated development in recent times.
