Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the border betwixt Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of approximately 37,000 and a history harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the adjoining town of Linslade and is about mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed near the Chilterns and boasts a vital quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is thought that there were settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in prehistoric times, historic artifacts and coins unearthed in the area give evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the nearby areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed the market place in about the tenth century, and relics stumbled upon mean that they were residing in the vicinity in all probability since the 6th Century. The village as it was then wasn't documented until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in times past, incorporated a significantly wider area than simply the town alone, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion wouldn't be added up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to several tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who supported Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town continued to grow throughout the succeeding years and the appearance of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it expand and develop. Present day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a thriving market town that's seen increased development in the past several years.
