Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds in the East of England, the smallish town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the border between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of around 37,000 and a heritage going back to the Roman period, when the ancient A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and it's about halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard History: It is felt that there were settlements in and near to what's now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old artifacts and coinage unearthed in the area give evidence of this. The historic Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe around about two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the village during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was they who used the market place during the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed suggest that they were inhabiting the region most likely from the 6th Century. The village existing then isn't described till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embodied a much wider area than just the town by itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name of the town appears to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" section was not added on until the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that was inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were tenanted to a number of tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).
