Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire, the town of Leighton Buzzard is close to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Beds, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a population of about thirty seven thousand and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the early Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly halfway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there had been settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to prehistoric times, early relics and coinage unearthed nearby show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the neighbouring areas of Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand years back, and the Romans will have at least known of the village as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities stumbled on show that they were staying in the area in all likelihood from the sixth century. The settlement existing at that time wasn't described until 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book identified Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, incorporated a way bigger area than merely the town alone, and consisted of the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the town's name may very well have come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part wouldn't be added prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln was required to distinguish it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to various tenants through the eras, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding during the coming decades and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw the town expand and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard is a blooming market town that has seen increased development in recent years.
