Located in the county of Beds, the small town of Leighton Buzzard lies close to the border between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a populace of around 37,000 and a historical past going back to Roman days, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is pretty much joined to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it's roughly midway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it is located near the Chiltern Hills and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard History: It's believed that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, ancient relics and coinage unearthed in close proximity show evidence of this. The historical Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through close by Dunstable and Hockliffe around two thousand years ago, and the Romans should have at least been aware of the village at that time.

The Romans were ultimately followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who developed a market sometime in the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered reveal that they were settling the vicinity quite possibly from the sixth century. The village existing then wasn't observed till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, comprised a far wider area than simply the town alone, and integrated the settlements of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element wouldn't be put on till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to several tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger throughout the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a blooming market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
