Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands right on the county border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population of about 37,000 and a history going back to Roman days, when the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Nowadays Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjoining town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it sits close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It is considered that there existed settlements in and near to what is now named Leighton Buzzard going back to prehistoric times, old relics and coinage discovered nearby offer evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now referred to as the A5, came through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who were using a market sometime in the tenth century, and artifacts found mean that they were residing in the area almost certainly from the sixth century. The village existing at this time is not described until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) documented Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a significantly larger area than merely the town alone, and covered the settlements of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not added till the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from another "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to various tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
