Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Facts:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lies very near to the county boundary between Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of approximately 37,000 and a story going back to Roman days, at which time the historic A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is more or less joined to the adjoining town of Linslade it is roughly midway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills and has a substantial quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coins discovered in close proximity show proof of this. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years ago, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement during those times.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and relics found indicate that they were settling the area more than likely from the 6th Century. The village as such wasn't discussed till 906 at which time the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, encompassed a way greater area compared to the town by itself, and covered the settlements of Eggington, Standbridge, Billington and Heath & Reach. The "Leighton" in the name is thought to been taken from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't appended prior to the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from yet another "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a variety of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger throughout the following decades and the coming of a canal and a railway service in the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard is a booming market town which has witnessed increased development in modern times.
