Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, the town has a populace close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman era, when the historical A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is about halfway between Luton (Beds) and Milton Keynes (Bucks), it sits very close to the Chilterns and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's considered that there were settlements in and near to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in prehistoric times, historic artefacts and coinage unearthed nearby offer evidence of this. The age old Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now called the A5, went through neighbouring Hockliffe and Dunstable about 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up the market place during the tenth century, and artifacts uncovered suggest that they were living in the neighbourhood perhaps since the 6th Century. The settlement existing then is not reported till 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, traditionally, embodied a considerably greater area compared to the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town is thought to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" element was not added on till the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln found it important to distinguish it from another "Leighton" which existed inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the centuries, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the succeeding generations and the building of a railway service and a canal during the 19th Century saw the town evolve and develop. Today's Leighton Buzzard can be described as a prospering market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
