Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the quiet town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary in between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a populace of approximately thirty seven thousand and a heritage extending back to the Roman period, at which time the early Watling St (now the A-5) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is approximately mid-way between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton, it stands very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has a significant sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there were settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artifacts and coins uncovered in the area offer evidence of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (engineered by the Romans), now termed the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Hockliffe and Dunstable around two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed after the Romans, and it was Saxons who used the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and relics uncovered show that they were residing in the neighbourhood probably since the 6th Century. The village as it was then is not observed till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book named Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, comprised a far larger area than just the town by itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be inserted prior to the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a different "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to an assortment of tenants over the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the construction of a canal and a railway service during the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be termed a successful market town that's seen greater development in the last few years.
