Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the border between Bucks and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population of around 37,000 and a past harping back to the days of the Romans, at which time the ancient A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed the town. Today Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade it is roughly mid-way between Milton Keynes and Luton, it is situated next to the Chiltern Hills and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's believed that there had been settlements in or around what is now known as Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, age-old artefacts and coinage discovered in close proximity give evidence of this fact. The olden Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through nearby Hockliffe and Dunstable some two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced a market in about the tenth century, and artefacts stumbled upon suggest that they were inhabiting the region in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The commune existing then isn't documented until 906 after the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book talked about Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, embraced a way greater area than only the town by itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Billington, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece wasn't added on before the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln found it appropriate to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a great many tenants over the years, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I through the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the following decades and the arrival of a canal and a railway in the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be termed a growing market town that has witnessed increased development in the past several years.
