Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lies right on the boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a resident population close to 37,000 and a past going back to the Roman era, at which time the historical Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is believed that there existed settlements in and close to what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, old artefacts and coins unearthed in the area offer evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (established by the Romans), now known as the A5, came through the neighbouring settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand yrs ago, and the Romans will have at the very least known of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who introduced the market place during the 10th Century, and relics discovered suggest that they were residing in the local area very likely from the sixth century. The village existing at this time was not cited till 906 after the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book of 1086 documented Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, encompassed a considerably wider area compared to the town alone, and comprised the hamlets of Stanbridge, Heath & Reach, Eggington and BIllington. The "Leighton" in the name of the town may perhaps have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get added till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the ages, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement continued to grow over the coming years and the development of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand.
