Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Situated in the county of Beds, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard lays right on the boundary in between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a population close to 37,000 and a story stretching back to the Roman period, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the neighbouring town of Linslade it is about halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it lies next to the Chiltern Hills and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

The History of Leighton Buzzard: It's thought that there were settlements in and close to what's now named Leighton Buzzard way back in unrecorded times, ancient artefacts and coinage uncovered nearby show evidence of this fact. The early Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now identified as the A5, ran through the neighbouring areas of Dunstable and Hockliffe about two thousand years back, and the Romans would have at least known of the village during those times.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place during the 10th Century, and antiquities discovered suggest that they were settling the locale in all likelihood from the 6th Century. The settlement as it was then wasn't mentioned until 906 when the Danes wrote a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) reported Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a significantly wider area than only the town itself, and consisted of the hamlets of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name may well have come from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion did not get inserted before the twelfth century at which time the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" which he had inside his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were let to a number of tenants over the generations, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).
