Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire, East of England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds in the East of England, the bustling town of Leighton Buzzard is right on the county border between Bucks and Beds, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a resident population of approximately thirty seven thousand and a history stretching back to the Roman era, at which time the historical A5 (then known as Watling St) passed by the town. Presently Leighton Buzzard is connected to the adjacent town of Linslade and is about halfway between Milton Keynes (Buckinghamshire) and Luton, it is found next to the Chilterns and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, early artifacts and coins found near by show evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now called the A5, passed through the neighbouring towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately 2,000 years back, and the Romans will have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard at this time.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was the Anglo-Saxons who set up a market sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts unearthed show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood undoubtedly from the sixth century. The village existing then is not mentioned until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the 1086 Domesday Book listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, incorporated a considerably bigger area than just the town itself, and incorporated the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to originated from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't put on up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from a second "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to an assortment of tenants through the eras, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I throughout the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement grew even bigger during the following years and the establishing of of a railway and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw it evolve and develop. Current day Leighton Buzzard can be described as a flourishing market town that has seen increased development in the past few years.
