Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Facts for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Beds in the East of England, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands very near to the boundary betwixt Beds and Bucks, beside the Grand Union Canal, the town has a population close to 37,000 and a history extending back to the era of the Romans, when the historical Watling St (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is connected to the neighbouring town of Linslade and it is roughly mid-way between Luton and Milton Keynes, it can be found very close to the Chilterns (Chiltern Hills) and has an important quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's felt that there were settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, age-old relics and coinage unearthed nearby give proof of this. The early Watling Street (built by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through close by Hockliffe and Dunstable approximately two thousand years ago, and the Romans would have at least known of the village at this time.

The Anglo-Saxons followed the Romans, and it was them who introduced the market place sometime in the tenth century, and artefacts found mean that they were settling the local area quite possibly from the 6th Century. The settlement existing then was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes produced a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over time, covered a lot greater area than just the town itself, and integrated the hamlets of Billington, Eggington, Heath & Reach and Stanbridge. The "Leighton" in the name of the town seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" portion was not to be appended till the twelfth century when the Dean of Lincoln wanted to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton were leased to a variety of tenants over the years, such as the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who endorsed Charles I in the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even larger during the following decades and the building of a railway and a canal during the Nineteenth Century saw it develop and expand. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard is a prosperous market town that's witnessed accelerated development in modern times.
