Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire, England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Positioned within the county of Beds, the charming town of Leighton Buzzard lies near the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about 37,000 and a historic past going back to the era of the Romans, when the ancient Watling Street (now the A-5) passed the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is linked to the neighbouring town of Linslade and is about midway between Milton Keynes and Luton, it lays very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a substantial sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It is considered that there existed settlements in and close to what is now known as Leighton Buzzard long ago in unrecorded times, age-old relics and coins stumbled on nearby show evidence of this fact. The longstanding Watling Street (made by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through neighbouring Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately two thousand in years past, and the Romans will have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement as they passed it.

The Romans were thereafter followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was they who introduced the market place in around the tenth century, and antiquities found suggest that they were residing in the vicinity quite likely from the 6th Century. The village as it was isn't discussed until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, typically, incorporated a much bigger area than just the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Heath & Reach, Stanbridge and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to come from the old English meaning "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component wasn't included before the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to differentiate it from an extra "Leighton" that existed within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to an assortment of tenants through the generations, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard grew even bigger over the ensuing generations and the building of a railway and a canal in the 19th Century saw the town develop and grow. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be described as a booming market town which has seen increased development in current times.
