Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It's considered that there existed settlements in or around what's now called Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, ancient relics and coins picked up in the area offer evidence of this fact. The old Watling Street (set up by the Romans), now known as the A5, passed through the close by towns of Hockliffe and Dunstable over 2,000 years ago, and the Romans should have at the very least been aware of the village at that time.

The Anglo-Saxons came after the Romans, and it was Saxons who developed the market place sometime in the 10th Century, and artefacts stumbled upon mean that they were settling the area in all probability from the 6th Century. The commune as it was then was not referred to until 906 at which time the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) talked about Leighton Manor.

The ecclesiastical parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, comprised a considerably larger area than simply the town alone, and contained the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" piece was not appended till the twelfth century after the Dean of Lincoln had to differentiate it from another "Leighton" which he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be tenanted to a variety of tenants over the years, for example the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who helped Charles I through the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town carried on growing throughout the succeeding decades and the establishing of of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw it develop and expand. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a successful market town which has witnessed improved development in modern times.
