Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Leighton Buzzard Information:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), England, UK.

Population: 37,000

Found in the county of Bedfordshire, the busy town of Leighton Buzzard lays very near to the border in between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a story harping back to the days of the Romans, when the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. These days Leighton Buzzard is attached to the adjacent town of Linslade and is approximately halfway between Milton Keynes (Bucks) and Luton (Bedfordshire), it stands next to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and boasts an important sand quarrying industry.

Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there had been settlements in or around what is now named Leighton Buzzard harping back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coins stumbled on in close proximity show evidence of this. The olden Watling Street (constructed by the Romans), now called the A5, cut through nearby Dunstable and Hockliffe roughly 2,000 years back, and the Romans would have at least been aware of the Leighton Buzzard settlement at this time.

The Romans were subsequently followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who set up a market during the 10th Century, and artifacts picked up show that they were inhabiting the neighbourhood almost certainly from the sixth century. The commune existing at that time was not mentioned till 906 at which time the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book recognised Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, in the past, embodied a significantly larger area than simply the town alone, and included the hamlets of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not added up until the 12th Century when the Dean of Lincoln found it vital to distinguish it from the other "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to a variety of tenants through the generations, like the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who followed Charles I during the English Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainLeighton Buzzard continued to grow over the succeeding decades and the appearance of a canal and a railway line in the 19th Century saw the town grow and develop. Modern Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a growing market town that has witnessed improved development in recent years.
