Review of Leighton Buzzard:

Information for Leighton Buzzard:

Location: Bedfordshire (Beds), East of England, United Kingdom.

Population: 37,000

Based in the county of Beds, the delightful town of Leighton Buzzard stands near the county boundary between Bedfordshire and Bucks, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Leighton Buzzard has a population of approximately 37,000 and a heritage harping back to Roman times, at which time the historic Watling Street (now the A-5) passed by the town. At present Leighton Buzzard is coupled with the nearby town of Linslade and it's approximately halfway between Luton and Milton Keynes, it is placed very close to the Chiltern Hills (Chilterns) and has a significant quarrying industry (sand).

Leighton Buzzard Through the Ages: It is felt that there existed settlements in and near to what is now called Leighton Buzzard stretching back to unrecorded times, historical relics and coinage stumbled on near by show proof of this fact. The ancient Watling Street (put up by the Romans), now named the A5, passed through the nearby settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe approximately 2,000 years ago, and the Romans would have at the very least been aware of Leighton Buzzard during those times.

The Romans were followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was them who were using the market place in about the tenth century, and antiquities found imply that they were settling the neighbourhood very likely from the sixth century. The settlement as it was then wasn't remarked upon until 906 after the Danes made a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) listed Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, over the years, embodied a considerably greater area than simply the town alone, and comprised the settlements of Billington, Stanbridge, Heath & Reach and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the name seems to been taken from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" part was not appended prior to the 12th Century at which time the Dean of Lincoln needed to differentiate it from the other "Leighton" that he had within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be let to numerous tenants over the centuries, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I in the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe town grew even bigger through the coming decades and the arrival of a railway service and a canal in the Nineteenth Century saw the town develop and evolve. Twenty-first century Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's seen accelerated development in the recent past.
