Positioned within the county of Bedfordshire in the East of England, the town of Leighton Buzzard lies near to the county boundary between Beds and Buckinghamshire, beside the Grand Union Canal, it has a resident population of about thirty seven thousand and a past harping back to the Roman era, at which time the Roman built A5 (then known as Watling Street) passed by the town. Leighton Buzzard Historic Past: It's thought that there existed settlements in or around what's now known as Leighton Buzzard going back to unrecorded times, historical artefacts and coins stumbled upon near by give evidence of this. The longstanding Watling Street (erected by the Romans), now identified as the A5, passed through the close by settlements of Dunstable and Hockliffe some two thousand in years past, and the Romans would have at least been aware of Leighton Buzzard as they passed it.

The Romans were in turn followed by the Anglo-Saxons, and it was Saxons who used a market during the 10th Century, and artefacts picked up suggest that they were staying in the neighbourhood most probably since the 6th Century. The settlement as such isn't discussed till 906 after the Danes signed a peace treaty at Tiddenfoot, the Domesday Book (1086) specified Leighton Manor.

The parish of Leighton Buzzard, historically, embraced a lot larger area than simply the town by itself, and included the settlements of Heath & Reach, Stanbridge, Billington and Eggington. The "Leighton" in the town's name appears to derived from the old English for "a clearing in the woods", the "Buzzard" component was not to be appended up until the 12th Century after the Dean of Lincoln had to distinguish it from an extra "Leighton" that was within his diocese. The Manors of Leighton would be leased to an assortment of tenants through the generations, including the Leighs of Stoneleigh, who backed Charles I during the Civil War (1642-1645).

Leighton Buzzard trainThe settlement carried on expanding throughout the ensuing generations and the development of a railway line and a canal during the 19th Century saw it develop and evolve. Modern day Leighton Buzzard can be referred to as a bustling market town that's seen increased development in modern times.
